About Jack

Jack was born on Lord Howe Island in 1961, and has spent his entire childhood and school years surrounded by the island’s nature.  Having spent the majority of his life there since, it’s no wonder that his love’s so strong for the mountains and the sea.

As a child, his father, Ray Shick, took him on pig hunting and rock fishing excursions, educating him about the many different plant, bird and fish species they encountered along the way. Jack also joined his uncles Jim, Max and Gower, on deep-sea fishing trips (his father did not appreciate boats!) and learnt all he could from them about handling small boats at sea. As a teen he was introduced to sailing by his school principal, John Shipton, and today enjoys everything from wild offshore yacht racing, to windsurfing and kitesurfing. But conquering the land and the sea was not enough.

Jack has been fascinated by flight for as long as he can remember. He was introduced to the concept of hang gliding by a video at school one day, and he was hooked from the first flight. He gained a lot of hang gliding experience while working on mainland Australia for two years in Leeton, New South Wales. He returned to Lord Howe in 1984 after almost seven years away from his island home.

Not long after returning, Jack met his wife, Cindy, and in 1992 they established Sea To Summit Expeditions offering fishing and bird watching tours onboard MV Noctiluca, and guided climbs to the summit of Mount Gower. Jack began mountain guiding 21 years ago when his father retired, and today, he has climbed to the summit of Mount Gower 1,655 times! His twice-a-week guided tours ensure there’ll be many more to climbs to come…

Jack is also an avid wildlife photographer and naturalist, and says Lord Howe provides amazing opportunities for both wildlife and landscape photography. He even documents local events and weddings, and is the official event timekeeper and photographer for the Mt Gower race.
